Spring 2017 Unit of Study:
Come play with us! Playhouse on the Square’s After School Acting Program (ASAP) offers young people in grades 2-8 the chance to delve deep into a specific style of theatre, learn about it, and create their own play based on that style! By learning through these specific theatrical styles, students are acquainted with various cultures and acting techniques while developing their cognitive and motor skills. Students use these skills as well as acting techniques, improvisation, and movement to create a short production. To enrich their experience in the program, all students attend a Playhouse production (included in tuition). At the end of the semester, all ASAP troupes come together to perform their pieces in ASAP’s Festival of Plays on Playhouse on the Square’s main stage.
Founded in 1998, ASAP has grown to include sites throughout Memphis and the surrounding area. Classes meet at sites set up in partnership with local schools, as well as sites hosted by local youth clubs, churches, synagogues, and community centers.
