After School Acting Program (ASAP)
Supported by FedEx Corporation
After School Acting Program sites are meeting throughout Memphis and the surrounding area at local churches, synagogues, schools, and community centers.
Founded in 1998, the After School Acting Program has grown to include sites throughout Memphis and the surrounding area, including Mississippi and Arkansas. ASAP is recommended for children age 7-12.
Classes meet for 1½ hours, twice a week for twelve weeks. (Classes do not meet the week of Thanksgiving, nor the weeks of the various sites’ Spring Breaks.) Instruction in the elements of Acting, Improvisation, Movement, Music, and Design are taught through a Style of Theatre. By learning through a theatrical style, students are acquainted with various cultures and acting techniques, while developing their cognitive and motor skills. Students also receive a ticket to a performance of a Playhouse production (relating to the style studied) to enrich their aesthetic awareness. These skills are then utilized in the Troupe's creation of a short production that is performed at Playhouse on the Square on the final day of the program (a Saturday) at ASAP’s Festival of Plays.
